ALL ABOUT ME...
Does anybody actually read these pages? In the unlikely event, here goes…
Dreamer. Artist. Daddy. Dork.
If I had to describe myself in 4 words, that would probably sum it up. Not much for an “About” page though so let’s wade into the deep end.
I’ve been drawing since before I can remember. Probably since I could hold a pencil. As a kid, I was obsessed with cartoons. Not like a normal kid… like really obsessed. I found comics and animation fascinating. Looney Tunes, Hannah Barbara, Calvin & Hobbes, pre-Simpson’s Matt Groening cartoons, whatever I could absorb. However, the early (and still) champions were Walt Disney and Marvel Comics.
I was 6 or 7 when I created my first comic strip: DAVE. Dave was this dope 80s dude that hung out at the beach, wore hot pink Oakley’s like Karch Karaly, and a sick bandana like Rambo. Naturally, he was modeled after the man I knew I’d someday grow to be. Dave, much like disco music and Luke Perry sideburns, eventually faded into obscurity. Yet during this prolific time, a friend of my mother’s had business cards made for me. They read: Kai B. Parker – Cartoonist – Creator of Dave. I was seven, guys. C’mon. I saw that and knew my destiny.
I began to hit my stride around age 19. In 1997, I was listed as one of the hottest young artists in OC and was showing and selling my work in galleries. That excitement was short lived unfortunately.
You see, life can always find a way to really kick you in the magic beans. After a series of Lemony Snicket’s, I found myself in a relationship with a beautiful Ginger (not recommended for the weak of heart) and two beautiful kids. Life was on the upswing. I got a good job, a sweet ride, and a house. Art and dreams though would have to take a backseat to things like mortgages and responsibility. I never really stopped being an artist (you never do!), but I couldn’t devote anything to it.
In 2016, with my kids (including a daughter who might be an even better artist than me) nearly grown, I drew a sketch of my favorite guy: Spider-Man. And you know what? It was pretty damn good. It really can be like riding a bike. So, in the weeks that followed, I drew some more… and then some more… and then…
That feeling. That smell. The fire was back… and so was I.
At the end of the day, I’m an artist. I’ve always been an artist. I might as well live my life the way I know I’m meant to.
So, welcome to my little mom and pop site on the web. I’m an artist and this is my art. This is the home of all my #Kaitoons. This is where I #drawitcuzitisntthere. This is where I draw proudly knowing while I can never draw like a lot of those Uber talented artists out there… they can never draw like me. This is what I do. This is me.
My name is Kai B. Parker. You might know me as The Amazing Kaiderman. I’m ALSO a dreamer..
Artist…
Daddy…
Dork…
Not necessarily in that order.
Hell, that’s more than most people can say!
